Copying Objects Between User Accounts

This article explains how Iotellect administrators can copy objects between different user accounts using the Iotellect Web UI. Such object cloning may be convenient in many cases, for example:

  • Share an object you've created with other users, such as an alert or report, without allowing them to modify the original object.

  • Allow a user to to use an object created by another user, without granting permissions to access the original object.

If you want to give one user permissions to fully access, modify and use some object that belongs to another user without making a copy of that object, see How to give one user access to the objects of another user.

Finding the Container Node

In the System Tree, expand the node for the user account () under which a copy will be created. User account nodes are located under the Users node (). Users node is available only if you have administrative permissions.

Within the target user's node, find the container node of the target object type. For example, if you are going to copy a script type object, find the Scripts node (). The example below shows a Script called Reminders owned by the user operator. We will create a copy of this script in the user account named researcher.

Creating from Template

Right-click the Scripts node () under the Researcher user and select Create from Template ()

This opens the Entity Selector window, find the target object to be copied, select it and click OK.

In our example, we expand Users node to find the operator user, expand the Scripts () node to find and select the Reminders script and click OK.

A copy of the selected script will be created under the account of the user researcher selected at the start of Step 2:

See Make Copy Action article for more information about object copying.

Using Drag and Drop for cloning objects

Another method to copy an object is to drag an object and drop it on the corresponding container node under another user account. This is faster but may be not convenient in some cases because nodes may be located far one from another in the System Tree and you'll need to scroll the tree while holding the mouse button pressed.
