Enabling SNMP Agent on Windows Systems

Refer to appropriate subsection to enable SNMP on:

You must have administrator privileges to enable SNMP on Windows System.

Install SNMP on Windows Server 2008

You can install the SNMP service in Windows Server 2008 using one of the following ways:

  • Use the Server Manager snap-in to add the SNMP Service feature
  • Or use the following command:
    start /w ocsetup SNMP-SC

Steps to Install SNMP on Windows Vista and Seven

  • From the Control Panel, select Programs
  • Under Programs and Features, select Turn Windows features on or off
  • In the Windows features list, scroll down to SNMP feature and expand the list so that you can see WMI SNMP Provider
  • Select the check box for WMI SNMP Provider. The check box for SNMP feature is selected automatically because the provider requires SNMP
  • Click OK
  • From a command prompt or the Start menu, run Services.msc and ensure that the SNMP service is started
  • Steps to Install SNMP on Windows XP, 2000, or 2003

  • Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components
  • Select Components, click Management and Monitoring Tools (not changing the state of its check box!), and then click Details
  • Select the Simple Network Management Protocol check box, and click OK
  • Click Next
  • Insert the CD or specify the complete path to the required files
  • This completes the installation process. This also implements the Host Resources MIB automatically. For configuring SNMP agents to respond to SNMP requests, refer to Configuring SNMP agents.

    Steps to Install SNMP on Windows NT

  • Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on the Desktop
  • Click Properties
  • Click Services
  • Click Add. The Select Network Service dialog box appears
  • In the Network Service list, click SNMP Service, and then click OK
  • Insert the CD or specify the complete path to the required files and click Continue
  • Microsoft SNMP Properties dialog box appears after the necessary files are copied
  • This completes the installation process. This also implements the Host Resources MIB automatically. For configuring SNMP agents to respond to SNMP requests, refer to Configuring SNMP agents.

    Steps to Install SNMP on Windows 98

  • Insert Windows 98 CD
  • On the Network control panel, click Add. The Select Network Component Type dialog box appears
  • Double-click Service
  • Click Have Disk in the Select Network Service dialog box
  • Type the path to the toolsreskitnetadminsnmp directory on your computer's CD drive in the Install From Disk dialog box and then click OK
  • Select Microsoft SNMP agent from the Models list in the Select Network Service dialog box and then click OK
  • This completes the installation process. This also implements the Host Resources MIB automatically. For configuring SNMP agents to respond to SNMP requests,  refer to Configuring SNMP agents.
